A carat is a unit for measuring the mass of
precious stones; it is equal to 0.2g
(0.00705) oz. It is part of the troy system
of weights. It is also the unit of purity in
gold (US karat). Pure gold is 24 carat, steel
is used with other carats (e.g.22), to give
it more strength.
